Cooperative care
Methods and protocolsTraining that teaches a dog to participate in their own handling and gives them a clear way to pause it.
How it works
The central mechanism is a start button: a position the dog adopts to say they are ready, such as resting a chin in a hand, and can leave to say they need a moment. Handling only happens while the dog holds the position. That turns procedures a dog would otherwise be restrained through into something they opt into, and the pause being genuinely honored is what makes the whole arrangement work. A start button the handler ignores stops meaning anything within a few repetitions.
What it looks like
A dog rests their chin in their person's palm and nail clipping begins. After two nails the dog lifts their head. Clipping stops immediately. Twenty seconds later the dog puts their chin back down and the session continues.
