Muzzle training
Methods and protocolsTeaching a dog to wear a basket muzzle comfortably, built in advance of any situation that requires one.
How it works
A basket muzzle allows a dog to pant, drink and take food, which is what makes it usable for more than a few minutes. Training proceeds in small steps: food through the front of the muzzle, then the nose entering briefly, then longer, then the strap done up for a second. Doing this before it is needed matters, because a muzzle first introduced at a vet's door in an emergency becomes associated with that moment. Any dog can be injured and need one, which is why it is treated as a general safety skill.
What it looks like
A muzzle is left on the floor with treats inside it for several days. The dog begins pushing their nose in to get them. Only after two weeks of that is the strap fastened, for two seconds, followed by chicken.

Basket muzzle (Baskerville-style)
A conditioned basket muzzle lets a dog pant, drink, and take treats, so it's a safety tool, not a punishment. We use it for reactive dogs in public and any dog still learning to be handled at the vet.
