Counterconditioning

Methods and protocols

Changing how a dog feels about something by repeatedly pairing it with something they like.

How it works

It works on association rather than on behavior. The trigger appears, something good follows, and over many repetitions the trigger itself comes to predict the good thing. Order matters and is the most common error: the trigger has to come first and the food second, because food that arrives before the trigger teaches the dog that food predicts something unpleasant. It is almost always run alongside desensitization, since the pairing only works while the dog is calm enough to notice it.

What it looks like

Every time another dog appears at a distance, chicken starts arriving. When the other dog leaves, the chicken stops. After several weeks the dog turns to their handler expectantly the moment another dog comes into view.

Commonly confused with

Desensitization
Desensitization is about intensity: meeting the trigger at a level small enough not to worry the dog. Counterconditioning is about association: pairing that trigger with something good. They are separate procedures and are nearly always run together.
