Shred box

Enrichment

A cardboard box packed with crumpled paper and food, given to a dog to take apart.

How it works

It provides an outlet for dissection, the shredding link near the end of the predatory sequence, using materials most households already throw away. The food buried in the paper starts the dog off, but the tearing tends to continue after the food has gone, which is the sign the shredding itself was the point. Difficulty is easy to adjust: loosely crumpled paper and visible treats for a first attempt, tightly packed paper and buried food once the dog has the idea.

What it looks like

A delivery box is filled with scrunched packing paper and a dozen pieces of kibble pushed down between the layers. The dog works for fifteen minutes, and the room needs sweeping afterwards.
