Dissection

Enrichment

Taking an object apart into pieces, which is the shredding end of the predatory sequence.

How it works

The chain a dog is built to run finishes with dissecting and consuming, and most pet dogs never reach those last links. A dog pulling a cardboard box apart, stripping a tube, or shredding a paper bag is completing a job their body expects to finish. Providing a safe outlet is usually easier than stopping the behavior, because the shredding is self-reinforcing: it is the point, rather than a means of reaching whatever is inside. A dog will often keep working on an empty box long after the food has gone, which is the clearest sign the tearing itself is what they were after.

What it looks like

A dog is given an empty cereal box with a few treats inside. They spend ten minutes tearing it into progressively smaller pieces, and carry on shredding for a while after the last treat has gone.

Commonly confused with

Shred box
A shred box is one way of offering this: a container packed with paper and food. Dissection is the behavior itself, which a dog can perform on almost anything soft enough.
