Lick mat

Equipment

A textured mat that soft food is spread across, so a dog has to lick it off rather than take it in mouthfuls.

How it works

Licking is a repetitive, sustained behavior, and the texture makes it last: a spoonful of something soft can occupy a dog for several minutes. That makes a mat useful wherever a dog needs to stay in one place and stay occupied, such as during grooming, inside a crate, or while a household is busy. What a mat reliably does is give a dog a slow, absorbing task in a fixed spot. The widely repeated claim that licking releases calming chemicals has no primary source behind it, so the mat is better described by what it does than by why it might work.

What it looks like

A dog who paces while the family eats is given a mat with a thin layer of wet food spread across it, placed on their bed. Clearing it takes several minutes, and for those minutes the dog is lying in one place rather than circling the table.
