Snuffle mat
EquipmentA mat of dense fabric strips that food is scattered into, so a dog has to find each piece by nose.
How it works
The mat works by making food hard to locate rather than hard to reach. That distinction matters: a dog who gives up on a puzzle needing paws or problem-solving will often work a mat happily, because searching is a behavior most dogs already know how to do. Scent is also the sense a dog gathers most of their information with, so a meal spent nosing through fabric asks more of them than the same meal in a bowl. Filling one too generously removes the searching and leaves only the eating.
What it looks like
A dog who empties a bowl in under a minute is given the same measured portion pressed down into a snuffle mat instead. The meal now takes several minutes, nearly all of it spent working nose-first through the fabric, and the food is the same food that would have gone in the bowl.
Commonly confused with
- Food puzzle
- A food puzzle asks a dog to solve something, usually by moving a part with a paw or nose. A snuffle mat asks them to search. Dogs who find puzzles frustrating often take to a mat straight away.

Snuffle mat
Hides kibble in the fabric so a dog sniffs it out, and sniffing is genuinely calming. Our go-to for a dog who needs a job on a rainy day.
Snuffle ball
A rolling snuffle toy a dog noses around to shake kibble loose. More movement than a flat mat, good for dogs who like to chase their food.
