Slow feeder
EquipmentA bowl with ridges or channels molded into it, so a dog has to work food out of the gaps instead of taking it in mouthfuls.
How it works
It slows eating by making each mouthful smaller and harder to gather, without asking the dog to solve anything. That makes it the lowest-effort option for a dog who eats very fast, and a sensible default where a puzzle or a mat would be more than the situation needs. Depth is the thing to check before buying one: a deep maze suits a long muzzle and can be genuinely hard for a flat-faced dog to reach into.
What it looks like
A dog who empties a plain bowl in under a minute is fed the same amount in a slow feeder with shallow ridges. The meal now takes several minutes, and nothing else about the feeding routine changes.
Commonly confused with
- Food puzzle
- A food puzzle has to be moved or operated before it releases anything. A slow feeder stays still and simply makes each mouthful harder to gather.
