Sleep debt
Health and safetyAn informal term, borrowed from human sleep science, for the shortfall that builds up when a dog gets less rest than they need over several days.
How it works
Dogs sleep both overnight and in naps during the day, and puppies need considerably more sleep than adults. A busy week of visitors, travel, training, boarding or a new home can quietly cut into that rest. Research on dog sleep is still young, but two findings point the same way. In a survey of over thirteen hundred dogs, shorter overnight sleep and sleep that was more easily disturbed were both associated with more severe problem behavior reported by caregivers. The authors state that the link does not show cause. In a laboratory study, features of dogs' sleep after a learning session were related to how much their performance improved afterward, and giving the dogs a different task to learn straight after the session interfered with the improvement. Trainers widely report that an overtired dog, especially a puppy, mouths harder, reacts faster and has more trouble settling. That pattern comes from professional experience, and no controlled study has measured it.
What it looks like
After a weekend with houseguests, a reactive dog barks at a neighbor he usually ignores, and his puppy sibling cannot stop nipping ankles. The household cancels Monday's outing, keeps the curtains drawn, and gives both dogs a quiet room with their beds and a chew. By Wednesday both are back to their usual behavior.

- Off-switch
- An off-switch is the learned ability to settle down after excitement. Sleep debt is a shortage of rest built up over days, and it can make settling harder even for a dog with a good off-switch.

Flat mat or bed
Flat on the floor rather than raised, which is what mat work and the Relaxation Protocol actually want: a surface a dog can lie fully stretched out on and roll off without a lip in the way.
White noise machine
Covers the outside sounds that set a reactive dog off at home: the hallway, the street, the neighbor's dog. Steady sound gives them less to react to.
