Jackpot

Learning science

An unusually large reinforcement delivered for a single, notably good repetition.

How it works

The idea is that a much larger payment marks a moment out from everything around it, so the dog registers that particular repetition as different. It is used for breakthroughs: the first time a dog manages something they have been failing at, or a choice made under real difficulty. Its effect depends on contrast, which means it stops working if it happens often. There is no strong evidence that a large single payment builds behavior faster than ordinary reinforcement, so it is best treated as a way of marking a moment rather than a technique with special power.

What it looks like

A dog who has never once turned away from a passing cyclist does so unprompted. Instead of one treat, they get eight, delivered one after another. Nothing else that session gets more than one.

Commonly confused with

High-value treats
High value describes what the food is: something the dog finds worth working for. A jackpot describes how much of it arrives at once. A jackpot of ordinary kibble is still a jackpot.
