Clicker
EquipmentA small handheld device that makes the same sharp click every time it is pressed, used to mark the exact moment a dog does the right thing.
How it works
The click works because it is identical every time and because it means nothing to the dog until it has been paired with food. Once that pairing is built, the sound can mark a behavior far more precisely than a spoken word, which varies in tone and usually arrives a moment late. Precision matters most when the behavior is quick or small: a paw lift, a glance, a second of stillness. The click is information rather than a reward, so food still follows every one.
What it looks like
A dog is learning to touch a hand with their nose. The click happens the instant the nose makes contact, not when the dog pulls away again, and the treat arrives a second later. Within a few sessions the dog starts driving toward the hand, because the click has told them exactly which part of what they did earned the food.
Commonly confused with
- Marker word
- A marker word does the same job with the voice and is always available. A clicker is more consistent and more precise, and it is one more object to hold while handling a leash and food.

Treat pouch (clip-on)
You can't reward fast enough digging in a pocket. A pouch you open one-handed changes your timing, and this one has a magnetic close plus a built-in clicker.
